At QBC, we’re always looking for ways to improve our young surfer pathway and ensure fair competition across all divisions.
This year, we’re making an important change for our micro surfers.
No Under 10 Division in 2026
To create a more even playing field in heats and better support skill progression, we will not be running an Under 10 Division this year.
Instead, we’re introducing a new division designed to better support developing surfers.
Parent Assist Division
The new Parent Assist Division is for young surfers who still require help paddling out or into waves.
Who is it for?
While there is no strict age category, we recommend this division for:
-
Any surfer over 6 years old
-
Girls under 14
-
Boys under 11
-
Any young surfer who needs assistance paddling out or into waves
If a surfer requires water assistance from a parent, they must compete in the Parent Assist Division. Parent assistance will not be permitted in any other divisions.
This ensures fairness across all heats.
How it Works
-
Runs on the same day as regular QBC competitions
-
Held on an appropriate bank
-
Judged separately from the main competition
Progression
If your surfer progresses during the year and no longer requires assistance, they’re welcome to move into their age division.
Please note: Division points will not transfer when moving divisions.
Under 12 & Under 14 Girls Divisions
In the U12 and U14 Girls divisions, parents will not be permitted to enter the water to assist competitors.
Surfers in these divisions must be:
-
Paddling independently
-
Competing without water assistance
As always, QBC will assess conditions and make safety-based decisions on the day. However, parents should always decide what’s best for their own child.
You can always come and discuss this with a committee member on the day.
Choosing the Right Division
Please consider carefully which division best suits your young surfer:
-
Parent Assist Division
-
Age Division (unassisted competition)
If you’ve already registered in an age division and would like to change to Parent Assist (or vice versa), please contact us and we’ll update your entry in LiveHeats.
